Why Is Formal Training Important to Filipino Staff?

  • Employer-provided training is both appreciated and expected within Filipino teams.  Your staff want clear guidance on how they need to improve for their current job requirements, and for promotional opportunities.

It is also widely recognized that the best employers will provide the training to get the outcomes that they want.

  • “Learning on the fly” is often how companies deliver training to their onshore staff, and this is expected within onshore cultures.

This frequently takes the form of a manager stating: “make your best effort at this new task, and tell me where you get stuck”.

This structured “attempt-fail-coach” approach works fine onshore because onshore staff are usually comfortable telling their boss what they DON’T know, to get help filling their skill gaps.

But in cultures like the Philippines, this approach generates an enormous amount of stress for staff, and can lead to high-pressure mistakes.

This is because Filipino staff feel like they are failing their boss simply by admitting a skill gap. They feel incompetent if they can’t do something (even if the boss never expected them to be able to do it), or may even believe they run a risk of being fired simply for asking for help.  If any human is constantly made to feel incompetent, it stands to reason they may change jobs to feel competent, or take risks to ‘fake’ competence (neither of which is good).

  • This is why our client advisory shows a specific way to ramp-up new staff to ensure each will be successful and frustrations can be minimized.
This is also why providing formal training is often the best way to fill skill gaps – it fits to Filipino cultural expectations of how they learn and how they want to impress their boss.

“But… we have subscriptions to online training portals…”

Why online self-paced training only works for 20% of your staff (onshore & offshore).

    • This issue is not even cultural – the problem occurs in both onshore and offshore teams.
    • If you ask technical team managers throughout the world how many of their staff completed a good number of self-paced training and certifications  in the last 12 months, their answer will be:

“Less than 20% of our staff pushed their career ahead via self-paced training”.

Up skilling the other 80% of staff are inevitably a source of frustration and effort for managers like you, everywhere in the world.

    • The conclusion is obvious: at least 80% of humans need support to prioritize learning and complete training goals – support that online training portals do not provide.

BUT few SME businesses/managers have the training resources at their disposal to fix this problem.

So What is the Solution?

    • It’s not better content.
It’s not more carrots (training bonuses and promotion promises).

Nor is it more sticks (penalties to salary increases or even termination threats if training goals not met).

    • The solution is to provide structure and accountability for your staff.

    • Structure: A formal structure to the course, with defined sessions, opportunities for Q&A, and a fixed completion date.

    • Accountability: Instructor-lead sessions; which ensure trainee turn up on time, focus on the module, and have their homework done before the next session.
Others studying the same course at the same time also helps.

Instructor-lead staff training is part of our standard solution for all clients and all staff.

We believe ongoing training is an integral part of helping our clients develop a comprehensive approach to building world-class offshore technical teams, and we aim to make it effortless for clients.

The employee performance evaluations that are conducted alongside each client, and the quarterly client Best Practice process both help to identify opportunities to uplift the skills of each individual team member.

Then in most cases we have training courses to help deliver the improvements needed.

Our courses include a wide range of technical skills and vital “soft skills” to ensure there’s always something useful for every team member to learn, every year.

Providing a training plan, (backed by structure and accountability) also helps to keep a lid on salary increases. When times are tight, your staff still feel like their careers are advancing with your organization, even if salary increases are minimal, because they keep doing courses and learning more skills.

Some Other Useful Things About our Training Services…

    1. All courses are instructor lead. As much as possible we use trainers who have the qualification they are teaching – techs training techs.

    1. All course sessions are less than 1 hour. Why? So you can easily manage for team members to be away from their desk for just one hour during their shift, and you can be sure they will be back to work on time.
This takes the hassle out of allowing staff to train during their shift time, and ensures that training is not competing with family time.

    1. Most vendor exams can be done in our office. We are Kryterion and PearsonVue accredited, so your staff can rapidly get their certifications without the time, cost and stress of having to plan a journey to some other examination place.

    1. Your Microsoft partnership relies on having employees with a range of MS certs right?  We have a bunch of courses that relate to the most commonly needed MS certifications.
So you can leverage your full time offshore team to boost your MS competencies – and we provide EVERYTHING to make that super simple.

  1. Got a great idea for a course you want us to run? Let us know, we are continually expanding our training and certification services. If it’s useful to you, it’s probably useful to a bunch of other clients, and we will make it happen.
